St. Joseph’s/Candler Joins the Race to Fight Cancer during the Leukemia Cup Regatta Series of Events

Since 1997, The Leukemia Cup Regatta, organized by the members of the Savannah Yacht Club, has raised more than $4 million for research and patient programs for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The Leukemia Cup Regatta includes a series of events that raise funds to increase awareness in the community about blood-borne cancers. The Regatta is the second largest Leukemia Regatta in the United States.

The date for the 2021 Leukemia Cup Regatta will be announced soon. It's held each year at the Savannah Yacht Club, with smaller events held throughout the year. St. Joseph’s/Candler is once again proud to be the presenting sponsor.

The main weekend of events include a golf, in-shore junior fishing and tennis tournaments, a black-tie dinner & auction, a sporting clays tournament, as well as the signature weekend of sailing events. At the opening ceremonies, a cancer survivor speaks on the importance of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and how it has helped them in their journey through drug research, education and financial assistance.

The LCR Weekend of Events evolved after the Olympics came to Savannah in 1996. Since 1997, members of the Savannah Yacht Club and the Leukemia Cup Executive Committee have worked tirelessly to expand the fundraising efforts into a community-wide series of premier sporting events to raise awareness and funds for the fight against leukemia, lymphoma, and other blood-related cancers. Money raised from the various events goes towards critical research to increase the survival rates of the nearly one million Americans who are now living with leukemia, Hodgkin or non-Hodgkin lymphoma or myeloma.

Research funded by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has led or contributed to advances such as chemotherapy, bone marrow and stem cell transplantation and new, targeted oral therapies.
